Content Reporting Capabilities in Showell’s free product

Showell’s Free product comes with several reports. In this article, we will focus on their content reporting capabilities exclusively.

Let’s dive into the administration side of Showell.

Administration in Showell

We won’t dive into Showell Administration deeply in this article as our focus is elsewhere. However, note that the Administration of Showell happens via a separate Administration area where you can manage users, groups, files, and run several reports, one of which is the Content Analytics report.

In our article regarding sales meetings with Showell, we reviewed the reporting capabilities for the end-users (sellers, customer success, etc.); all other reports are in the Administration area.

Content Analytics Report

When you log into the Administration area, you first land in the Files section; you select the Analytics menu (see below) to see the choice of reports.

The content reporting capabilities in Showell are available in the Content analytics report.

Upon selecting Content analytics, the report loads with a default time range of yesterday.

We did some testing recently, so lets change the time range in the upper right so that it reflects better data for this article.

The Content Analytics report in Showell

Let’s review the content reporting capabilities, based upon what this report shows us.

Only used content is visible

In this report, you only see content that was viewed during the time period.  While this is often the most important content, as a content administrator, marketer, or enabler, you often want to see what content is NOT being used.  This is critical for content audits.

You can dive into the details

The content list on the left contains each document that was viewed and the summary of the viewing that took place during the reports time range.  You can easily click on the document title to drill in and see more details.

Content viewing details

We clearly need to add more test data, but you can tell from the screen shot:

  • You see page-level details, how much total time was spent on any given slide in the PowerPoint we are looking at here.
  • Sharing activity is available as well.
  • Each view is tracked in the upper left.
  • Viewing can be broken down by viewing group if set up.

Page Viewing Activity via the summary page

If you click on the eye-icon (in the page views column), a popup window opens to show the same page-level insights as on the details page above.

User and Folder -Level Filtering

Using the controls in the upper right, you can filter down as shown here to any registered user or any folder in your system.

Search Terms

Search reporting is an underappreciated capability in some circles, and it is wonderful to see it in the Showell product.

If you understand your teams’ search terms, you can use the appropriate taxonomy and nomenclature for file names to make it easier for them to find the content they are looking for in the system.

Using this information as part of your regular content audits will significantly improve content discoverability in your enablement systems.

Summary

We continue to consider Showell’s FREE product a good option for small businesses. While it lacks the richness of reporting larger or more mature, data-driven organizations will need, it is deep enough for those organizations where the primary interest is to track seller activity versus improving the entire go-to-market motion.
